The legend of Ha long Bay

Ha Long Bay is the best know natural wonder of Vietnam. Located in
northern Vietnam's gulf of Tonkin, over 3,000 limestone islets rise straight
up from the emerald water. Clouds float ominously by, and wind
whips up whirlpools of mist. Ha Long is a place of beauty and mystery.

Ha long means "where the dragon descends into sea." According to legend, a
great dragon that lived in mountains ran towards the sea, its tail gouging out
valleys and gorges. After the dragon plunged into the sea, water filled the
holes the dragon had left behind, leaving only bits of land over the surface.
Some locals still believe the dragon lives in the depths of the bay. Local sailors
often report sightings of a Loch less type beast call the Tarasque.
